The fiscal 2011 started on a very high note for the Indian auto sector and its consumers with plenty of new launches in virtually every segment. Then came the Indian government with new fuel price hikes leaving petrol affordable to few and giving a huge blow to the auto sector. Finally the drift shifted towards diesel.

Honda, in particular, suffered above the rest being perhaps the only automaker in India with no diesel option in any of its products. The September 2011 sales point as deep as 18% down. But once again, Honda begins to rise. With slashing the prices for the Jazz and City, its once more in the race. And now comes the ace, the Honda Brio.

Brio, the much awaited compact hatch delayed earlier courtesy the Japanese tsunami is here now and Honda plans to turn the sales chart upside-down with the Brio, eyeing 15% sales increase this fiscal in a year when the auto sector here aims a growth of meagre 2-4%.

"We had sold 60,000 units in India last fiscal. We are expecting a sales growth of 10 to 15 per cent in this fiscal in the country," says Honda Siel Cars India Ltd's director (sales and marketing) Seki Inaba adding "We have Brio this year and the model should give us volume. We are aiming for a volume growth of 10-15% during the current fiscal".

Further, he said, "We are currently producing engine and engine components at the Rajasthan plant and we may expand complete car production once we reach the optimum capacity at the UP plant". The plant currently produces 1-lakh units.
