Dampa Tiger Reserve, the biggest Wildlife Sanctuary in Mizoram was notified in 1985 and declared a Tiger Reserve in 1944. It is situated in the western part of Mizoram state on the international border with Bangladesh about 127 km. from Aizawl. It covers an area of approximately 550 Sq. Km. The tropical Forests of Dampa are home to rich Flora and Fauna...

The virgin forests of Dampatlang & Chhawrpial tlang, the unique flora of wet/semi - evergreen forest to deciduous forest.

Forest interpolated with steep precipitous hills, deep valleys, jungle streams, ripping rivulets, natural salts licks, with an altitudinal zone of 200 - 800 mts.

Habitat of unique and endangered wild animals. A healthy and refreshing environment - far away from the hectic urban life.

The major flora consist of a mixture of several species such as Dipterocarpus turbinatus, Dipterocarpus marcocarpus, Terminalia myriocarpa, Michelia champaca, Artorocarpus chaplasha, Sterculia vilosa, Psteropernum personatum, Tonna ciliata, Chukrasia tubularis, Syzygium cumini, Aedinia caudifolia, etc. and different species of Bamboos Cane and Orchids.

Dampa Tiger Reserve encompasses a variety of rare and endangered animals in abundance, the comprehensive list of fauna found in the Sanctuary are :- Rhesus macaque, Leaf monkey(Dawr), Pigtail macaque(Chengker Zawng), Stumptail macaque(Zawngmawt), Hoolock gibbon(Hauhuk), Assamese macaque(Phaizawng), Slow lorris(Sahuai), Giant squirrel(Awrrang). Tiger(Keipui), Leopard(Keite), Indian Elephant(Sai), Gaur(Sele), Serow(Saza), Barking deer(Sakhi), Wild boar(Sanghal), Porcupine(Sakuh)), Sloth bear(Mangtir), Himalayan black bear(Savawm).Great Indian hornbill(Vapual), Malbar pied hornbill(Vahai), Peacock pheasant(Varihaw), Red jungle fowl(Ramar), Crested serpent eagle(Muvanlai), Emerald dove(Ramparva, Hill myna(Vaiva). Python(Saphai), King Cobra(Chawngkawr), Monitor lizard(Tangkawng), Hill Tortoise(Satel).

Rainfall                 :               2000 to 2500 mm

Climate                 :               Pleasant and equable warm climate throughout the year with moderate to chilly winter during November - December at the higher altitudes.

Best Season to visit         :               October to March.

Suggestion to visitors»

• Treat the Sanctuary with respect as the sanctum sanctorum of nature.

•If you are in a vehicle, bear in mind that wild animals have the right of way within the Sanctuary.

•Transistors, tape recorders and loud conversations are prohibited in the Sanctuary.

• Dress in colors that blend with the forest like khaki brown, olive - green eye.

• Make full use of the knowledge of local guides and Field staff on duty.

• Do not use guns, shoot with your camera instead.

• Make the most of your visit - learn a little more of the world you are a part of.

 

Caution»

• Take strict precautions to prevent accidental forest fires caused by carelessness.

• Avoid any form of pollution within the sanctuary either of air, soil and water including the flora and fauna

• Keep a reasonable distance from all animals. Disturbed animals may be provoked to attack.

• Do not go near a nest, an alarmed bird can damage the eggs to be hatched.

• Leave things as you found them, do not litter.
