Ford India Private Limited (FIPL), the American multinational automobile manufacturer, suffered a PR nightmare as its 30 year old employee in suspension, Nirmal Raja Ramaswamy committed suicide by consuming poison in his native place Thiruvallur. Raja was employed at the company's Maraimalai Nagar based facility around 50 km from Chennai and had been suffering from acute depression following his suspension for the last six months.

N.K. Arumgam, Raja's Brother-n-law said, “He was a calm and an upright person. He also served in the army for a brief period. He was suspended by Ford India more than six months back and attended the enquiry proceedings. He was feeling depressed before taking the drastic decision.”

Further, it has been revealed that Raja's family had been planning for his marriage and even had a suitable prospect in the offing. Arumgam added, “We started searching for a suitable match for him. But he put a stop to that saying that the process could be started after his suspension gets revoked.”

Arumgam informed that the internal probe regarding Raja's engagement in a work boycott in March 2012, ended two months back and FIPL failed to come up with some concrete decision on the matter.

A. Satish Kumar, General Secretary (GS), Ford India Employees Union (FIEU), said, “Out of the seven workers who were suspended, two went back to work while the remaining five (including Raja) decided to fight it out. The internal enquiry (against Raja) was over in July this year. Since then we have not heard anything from the management."

According to FIPL, the company remained taut and supported the investigating agencies throughout the evaluation period without letting anything taken for granted. A spokesperson of Ford India quoted, “Until the investigation is complete, we cannot comment.”

Reportedly, some intense labour trouble broke out at the FIPL Chennai premises in March 2012, when about nine workers were suspended for faking pharmacy invoices, in order to take undue advantage from claim reimbursements. Following dismissal the factory workers disobeyed the rules, remained absconding from work for two days and demanded the revocation of the suspension order of the nine workers. Later at the conciliation meeting, the company refused to take any action against the abstaining workers and called off the suspension orders of six of the nine suspended employees, while three resigned. Evidently, FIPL dismissed seven workers comprising Raja and six officials of the FIEU for the March commotion and started an internal probe against them.
